In business, in relationships, and in life, we are constantly evolving. Some things we can prepare for. Others we cannot. It’s impossible to know what the future holds or what’s going to be required of us. How do we build a firm foundation for ourselves so that we’re able to embrace flexibility and roll with the metaphorical punches?
It’s simpler than you might think. What it comes down to is identity.
Throughout the evolution process, many things will change. But the core values that compose our identity, the values that make us who we are, they remain the firm foundation from which we can be flexible, grow, and learn.
If you feel unsettled by changes or they completely throw you off your game, chances are you’re disconnected from your values. So, what do we do to make sure we stay rooted in our foundational values in spite of the changes going on around us and within us?
Here are a few things you can do to make sure you stay connected to your identity even in the midst of change:
- Spend time with yourself.
This may sound strange, but you must get comfortable spending time alone with yourself. Whether this is meditation, journaling, or just focused reflection, it’s vital for you to be in touch with what you’re feeling, whether your actions are aligning with your values, and what you need to do to take care of yourself in times of transition. - Don’t be afraid of discomfort.
Change is not easy. It pushes us to the edge of what we’re comfortable with and forces us to evolve. This is normal. Getting used to the discomfort rather than running from it or struggling to solve it will help you stay grounded in your values. It’s okay to be uncomfortable. You can live out your values and stay in touch with who you are even when there is chaos around you. - Get really clear on what your values are.
If you’re feeling unsettled or dissatisfied with your life it’s very likely that you’re not living in alignment with your values. One of the ways you can begin to identify your values is by looking at what makes you angry. If you’re upset when people are disrespectful, respect may be one of your core values. If laziness annoys you, a strong work ethic may be one of your core values. Pay attention to what is important to you and make decisions accordingly.
Understanding your values is integral to navigating the changes that will inevitably come. You can’t plan for everything. You can’t even plan for most things. But you can make sure that no matter what changes happen, your identity remains intact.
