Easter is just around the corner, and with it comes family, friends, and eggs – lots and lots of chocolate eggs. What better way to have some fun than with an Easter egg hunt? A seemingly simple task on the surface, but there are many things you should consider in order to host the best ever Easter egg hunt.
Easter Egg Hunt Guide:
- Pick a hunting ground. To start choose an area where your hunt will take place. Think about how many people will be participating, the ages of those people, and the weather (not to be overlooked). These factors influence the ideal hunting ground. The more people you have, the bigger space you will want, generally a backyard is a good choice. Also, think about the age of those hunting. Younger kids will generally need an easier hunt compared to those who are grown up. You can separate your hunting ground into two areas, one for the younger hunters and one for the older hunters. In order to do this, you’ll need to find an area big enough to properly accommodate both groups. The hunting ground can make or break a good hunt so think about it carefully.
- Set the mood. Decorate your home with an Easter theme. This sets the mood and creates a fun environment with a real sense of occasion. Also, it is a fun activity you can do with your children. Not only does it allow for creative hands-on time, but it also is a great opportunity for together time, win-win. Setting the mood helps people get excited and more enthusiastic about the upcoming Easter egg hunt.
- Have a special egg. Have one egg that is different from all the rest. You can choose to hide this egg amongst the others or have it as a prize for the person who collects the most eggs. By adding in one special egg, you create some friendly competition and also give the hunters something extra to focus on which keeps them engaged.
- Hide the eggs. Depending on the age group of those who are hunting hide the eggs in increasingly difficult spots. For younger kids don’t hide them in places which are too tricky. For older kids, hide the eggs in more creative and harder to find places. You don’t want the hunt to be so hard that people are discouraged, but you don’t want to make it so easy that people get bored. Be creative with your hiding, place some eggs in shoes, under a seat cushion, or on a branch. Make sure you count the eggs before you hide them as you’ll need to know if there are any eggs still hidden.
- Share the bounty. Once all the hunting is over, and everyone has counted their eggs, collect them all in a pile. Divide the pile evenly among those who participated. This is a fair way to ensure everyone gets the same amount of eggs (unless there was a prize for collecting the most eggs) and cuts out any potential arguments that may arise. After all, you are trying to make a fun event for everyone.

- Try to avoid placing any eggs in direct sunlight or warm areas as they are likely to melt
- Avoid hiding eggs in places that may make them unappetizing, such as dirty or wet areas
- For a different type of egg hunt allocate one type/colour of egg per hunter. That hunter may only collect their type of egg. First one to get collect all their eggs wins
