Work with Your Mindset to Achieve Your Goals

If you need a new year for a new you, you’ve already failed.

It’s that time when I talk about new year’s resolutions. As if there was some mystical force that we receive at the end of the year. We believe and have hope that the new year brings a new you. The truth is, it does not. If you need a new year for a new you, you’ve already failed.

Change is available to us every moment of every day. All we need to do is commit to it. We don’t need a new year. We need a new mindset. We need to understand that we are in control of what we bring to our future. Sure, there will be events that are beyond our control. But, how we respond (if we respond at all) is where our power lies. Not a date on the calendar, and not on a list of resolutions that we write. If we truly desire change, it is already ingrained within the very fibre of our being.

I am not taking away that some people actually do keep their new years’ resolutions. However, last time I researched, only 10-15 percent of people will hit their goals. Why is that? My guess is that if we truly desired change, we wouldn’t stop until the goal was met.

Let’s look at it from a different perspective. If our goal was to live off the land in order to live, I would bet that we would learn very quickly how to do so, be it, hunter or gatherer. Our very survival depended upon it. But, if our goal was to lose 20 pounds in 6 months, the motivation would not match that of living off the land. It is the value that we place on the resolution.

Let us look at another example. You visit the doctor for your yearly examination. The doctor says that you have pre-diabetes. They suggest that you cut back on your sugar intake. Whereas scenario number two, you are Diabetic. The doctor says to cut back on your sugar intake or you will lose your foot. Which scenario would you have more motivation for?

The new year is not the answer. The mindset is. If you desire to lose weight, quit smoking, get out of that toxic relationship or get a better job, the time is now. Not the new year. Because the value we place on the goal or resolution should be all the motivation that we need. The new year is sexy and promises to bring change. Just because we dress it up and it presents well, that doesn’t mean it is going to perform well.

So jump off the bandwagon. The new year is not the answer. The mindset is.
