The Early Struggles
My name is Amy Temple, and my journey with learning disabilities began with a series of early struggles that shaped the narrative of my life. Diagnosed at the tender age of 5, I found myself in a world where my constant crying and seemingly simple misunderstandings posed a challenge for those around me. A paediatrician questioned if I might be uneducable due to my persistent tears, and a psychologist, astounded by my lack of knowledge about frankfurters, was met with a simple explanation from my mother – we always called them hot dogs. Little did anyone know, these early struggles were mere glimpses into a story of resilience that was yet to unfold.
Defying Affirmations
As the years progressed, so did the affirmations that sought to define my future. Phrases like “Amy will not amount to much because of her learning disabilities” and “Amy will always need assistance in taking care of herself” echoed through the corridors of my life. However, I was fortunate to have a support system that defied these limiting beliefs. My grandparents and parents stood by me, offering unwavering love and support during times when I struggled to feel good about myself. Their belief in my potential became the bedrock upon which I built resilience.
Navigating Employment Challenges
Armed with secretarial certifications after high school, I embarked on the journey to find employment. However, the road was far from smooth. Temp jobs and internships offered temporary solace, only to end with promises of potential openings that never materialized. The world seemed to have preconceived notions about what someone with learning disabilities could achieve. It was a challenging period that tested not only my professional aspirations but also my belief in my own capabilities.
The Dog Sitter Years

In the midst of these challenges, a unique opportunity presented itself – self-employment as a dog sitter. For nearly 16 years, I found fulfillment in caring for furry companions. While this venture brought joy, it also served as a backdrop to a persistent dream – the dream of becoming a writer. The decision to shut down my dog-sitting business was not just a professional transition; it was a pivotal moment marking my commitment to pursue my passion for writing full time.
The Path to Self-Discovery
The journey to self-discovery is seldom swift. It took years of introspection, self-reflection, and a deep dive into my true passions to uncover what I genuinely wanted. Writing emerged as my calling, a path that aligned with my desire to inspire others. The decision to pursue writing full time was a bold step, a declaration of my determination to break free from preconceived notions and societal expectations.
Worthy Beyond Labels
In a world obsessed with labels and societal norms, I stand firm in declaring my worthiness beyond the confines of learning disabilities. The labels that were once attached to me are mere facets of my journey, not definitions of my capabilities. I am who I am, unapologetically, and my name is Amy Temple.
Inspiring Others

My ultimate goal is clear—I want to inspire. For those who share a similar journey, I extend a hand of camaraderie. Let my story be a source of encouragement and a testament to the resilience within each of us. Society often imposes arbitrary standards, dictating what success should look like. However, success, fulfillment, and authenticity are subjective. They are found in embracing one’s uniqueness and charting a course that resonates with one’s true self.
In sharing my journey through these subheadings, I hope to paint a vivid picture of a life marked by challenges, triumphs, and an unwavering spirit to inspire others to embrace their unique paths. Life is a journey, and in every twist and turn, there is an opportunity to redefine what it means to be successful, resilient, and authentically ourselves.
