The True Meaning of Christmas

In the busyness and chaos of presents, tinsel and trees, it can sometimes be tricky to take a moment to appreciate what the real meaning of Christmas is.

While the giving of gifts is a beautiful tradition, Christmas can be reduced to getting what you want or the expense of the gift.

The true essence of giving a gift is all about getting something meaningful, thoughtful, that is within your budget and will create joy for another.

In addition to gift giving Christmas is so much more than that. Christmas has religious significance, communion, togetherness, magic and remembering what is really important.

The true meaning of Christmas is:

1.  A Religious and Cultural Celebration

Christmas is celebrated by billions of people all over the world as a religious ceremony by many and culturally by many others. In the Christian religion. The true meaning of Christmas is to remember that our true nature is one of peace and harmony and to practice goodwill to all men, not only at Christmas time but throughout the entire year. Christmas is a reminder that we are in fact all connected, we are not alone, we are all part of one big family, the family of humanity with all its imperfections and great beauty.

2. Generosity

Christmas often inspires us in to be charitable, wanting to reach out and be involved in our community lending out a helping hand wherever we can. I know that last year, a few weeks before Christmas it was impossible to volunteer at any charity in Sydney, Australia to help with Christmas lunch as all places had enough volunteers. Wouldn't it be wonderful if that was the case throughout the rest of the year too?

When it comes to giving gifts it definitely gives the giver a warm healthy glow, due to the release of the "feel-good" hormones. Making someone else happy gives you the added benefit of being happy as you share in their joy. Imagine giving the gift of positive vibes to all that you see, not when giving gifts, but consistently throughout the year. More than buying and receiving presents, the truth of life is experienced by living life in an open-hearted way on a daily basis.

The true joy of life is not about what you can get, including getting love from others, it is about being love on a daily basis. You are love, that is your true nature.

3.  Family

The true meaning of Christmas is gathering together with the people you love. This could be your immediate family, extended family, your soul family and generally the people you love most in the world who you want to be with.

Any underlying family tensions can be brought to the surface at Christmas time when people are overtired and stressed from Christmas preparations and the with the influence of alcohol thrown in. What is meant to be a glorious, peaceful and loving day can turn into a hotbed of emotions. Ideally, any tensions can be worked through in a positive, life-enhancing way, bringing people closer together. Forewarned is forearmed, so to avoid those tensions at the Christmas table see
How to Get Along During the Holiday Season.

The true meaning of Christmas can extend to your global family. It can be inviting someone who is lonely, an elderly neighbour, someone who is homeless or a refugee over for lunch or Christmas dinner. Sharing love and joy and connecting with our fellow human beings no matter who they are is what the true spirit of Christmas is all about.

4.  Reflection

Christmas is a time of rebirth, as one year ends, another begins. Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to look back at all the moments you have to be grateful for, and express thanks to those that mean everything to you, while you are together.

It is also a time where you can reflect upon your learnings and look at ways to do things differently in the New Year. It is a time to be proud of all that you have done and to make a commitment to do more of the things that enhance your life and for those around you.

Christmas marks the lead up to the new year. It is a great time to begin setting your intentions for your future. Settle into a sense of peace and start visualising the year ahead as your best year ever.

5. Love, joy and fun

There are many different types of love; self-love, unconditional love, romantic love, friendly love, familial love. Christmas is a combination of them all.

Just like presents, you have to receive love in a certain way. How you give it plays a huge role here because we can often see our reflection in others. If you treat someone well, they will treat you well in return, and the opposite is also true.

Christmas is a time to be your best self. It is a time to be generous and forgiving. Spread maximum joy by giving good vibes to all that you meet, regardless of their behaviour.

Everyone want to be happy. It is easy to forget amongst the stress and chaos of everyday life that happiness is our true nature, it is who we truly are. Christmas has is inherently a happy, joyous day as it is a celebration of new life.
